Brief 1 - Imagery
After the crit I received some feedback form the laurel leaves, that they a remindful of the Fred Perry logo - which is a fashion brand. After coming up with a few ideas for images, that aren't as obviously related to graduation as things such as the cap, and scroll. I thought about the idea of using wings.
When its is time for birds to flee the nest, they fly. They prepare and learn how to survive and then they go out alone. I think this is relative to Graduation because students have done the learning and preparation at LCA, and graduation marks the day that they receive reward for their achievement, but is there time to go at it alone, they are free to do what they want to do. They have their wings.
Wings can often have inspirational or spiritual symbolism.
Wings, often associated with birds, represent speed, elevation, freedom and aspiration.
Wings associated with angels are spiritual, symbolizing enlightenment, guidance and protection.
Wings have been used in a lot of logos for cars, to symbolise speed and freedom:
They have also been used to represent flying aircraft
Maybe creating the wings out of something more relevant to graduation may be the way to go. E.g. using ribbon. The ribbon is wrapped around the scroll and is the main things that is received on the day. The wings wrapped with ribbon would represent receiving your wings, meaning you are free.
Eagle - Spirit. Eagle flies fearlessly, bridging heaven and earth, and teaches us to courageously face our fear of the unknown in order to fly as high as our heart's joy can take us.
Owl- Wisdom.Owl, the night hunter, has the ability to see what others may miss. The gift of this medicine is to be undeceived by external appearances and to discover the truth beneath them.
Using the owl wings could also be related back to the Owl that represents Leeds:

Team Impression - Latest Printed Work
I particularly liked these printed designs, so here I was looking at the appropriate paper stock, printing process and GSM that has been used. I also found the Print School Page on Team Impression website, to be useful in helping to prepare files for commerical print. This particular feature focused on foil blocking, which is what I am considering using as a print finish for my the Graduation Brief Design.
Print School
Foil Blocking:
Uses:
Although it is most widely known and used in its gold and silver forms, there seems to have been a recent resurgence amongst Team’s designer clients to use coloured foils, especially white, black and clear. This can achieve really striking results, such as in the example opposite, where a blue foil has been used on a blue uncoated stock. Clear foils can be extremely effective in cases such as this but on certain stocks a slight ‘mottling’ effect may appear where the fibres of the stock show through, especially if the stock has a very open and tactile surface. The coloured foil provides an excellent solution here, and nowadays it is relatively easy to find coloured foils to match a design.
Tips:
Clear foils can often be much more effective than spot varnishing. Be imaginative. As well as the wide range of colours available, there is also a wide range of special effect foils, such as pearlescent, opalescent, holographic and textured.
Preparing your artwork:
Treat your foiled area as a single coloured colour plate, clearly identified as a foiled area. It is worth considering that different coloured foils achieve different results on different stocks. This can greatly affect the fineness of detail that can be achieved, especially when foiling text in very small point sizes. In general, a smoother sheet will usually be preferable in these cases. There are always plenty of samples of foiled jobs in the Team portfolio.
Examples:
The basics:
Foil blocking is a dry printing process in which a thin layer of foil is transferred via a die to the surface to be printed. A combination of heat and pressure releases the pigment and leaves the image on the printed surface.Uses:

Lee Cooper look-book-
This Lee Cooper look-book was designed by 999 in Manchester and printed on 350gsm Stephen Sultry Grey and 130gsm Arctic Volume White, loop stitched with a gloss black foil to finish.
Blue print for success-
Put an imaginative designer together with a like-minded printer and what do you get? A fabulous brochure with blue foil and a specially mixed blue ink printed onto Colorplan Imperial blue.
JD Sports Annual Report and Accounts 2010-
Team got their best trainers on and shot out of the blocks to produce this in personal-best time. The cover, printed on Colorplan Prisine White, features an exceptionally crisp embossed headline set in a caption balloon of clear foil and a silver foil title.
Cofra brochure-
This brochure for Cofra, designed by Mark Starbuck and Anthony Hodgson at Face Media, is a brilliant example of getting the most out of Team – using a combination of digital print, litho, foiling and hand finishing.
The slipcase and cover is Sirio Pietra 210gsm, silver foiled and hand finished in-house. The internal shortened pages are litho printed metallic silver on Sirio Pietra 140gsm with the main text pages digitally printed onto Splendorgel Digital 140gsm (all papers by Fedrigoni).

Identity and communications for the most ambitious fundraising drive in Yale's history, a comprehensive five-year capital campaign that raised $3.88 billion.

In this branding for Yale University a simple >> is used to represent 'tomorrow'. The concept informs the audience of ideas that could be, and will be, in the future from a technological point of view, that tomorrow will bring change.
The main colour used is dark blue. Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness. It is also linked to consciousness and intellect.
This is an appropriate colour for Yale as it is representing education.
The tone o voice is quite formal and serious, but also inspirational to think of possibilities of the future.

For NYC Parks the colour green is used along with a leaf in their logo and across their branding to represent nature and the environment, this is also used with white which associates with clarity and purity.
I particularly like the posters with imagery in black and white with the orange colour block. This 2 colour design is effective and eye catching.
The branding is consistently spread across a range of materials that are appropriate to the audience. The signage for the parks have a clear hierarchy of information and are shown in context for more clarity.

The identity for the exhibition uses imagery with a bold typeface, which gives clarity and context to the promotional material. The white of the type stands out from the image, and the small red box of the 'Royal Academy of Arts', is an accent colour which also stands out on its own.
The promotional posts are consistently used in all scales and proportions in the format of window displays, building hangings, strip banners and subway posters.

The colour used in these designs plays an important role in these deigns. I think they may be reflective of the culture, and when they are used over a black background it really puts emphasis not hem and make them stand out, wether in type of pattern. The pattern is a nice touch, and I like the purple colour block with the white text as it stands out. The range is consistent, and also uses type that is reading sideways across a lot of the booklets. This is relevant to the hierachy.

This set of printed material for the Art Directors Club has a feeling of importance and clarity. The 'A's' and 'D's' in the list of names are in a different colour to the rest of the letters, which is a nice subtle touch. Care has been taken to create printing on the edges of paper to the pages below, which reflects precision. I like the typeface used and think it is effective and appropriate. The logo has quite a decorative element that suggests elegance. On the printed book the white typeface is quite dominating, contrasting against the black/grey stock. The subtle embossing of the logo which splays across the front and back of the cover is a subtle touch that suggests care and attention to detail. I think these elements reflect the business as a leading company in there market, known for attention to detail. The bellybands are also a nice touch.

Based on the theater's nickname, "The National," we designed a masthead, referencing newspaper layouts. A distinctive diagonal cut draws attention both to the theater name and its programming. The launch campaign took inspiration from circus posters and centered on the word “Enfin!,” or “Finally!"

Leeds College of Art Logo - Laurel Leaves
The Leeds College of Art mosaic:
Early 20th century mosaic above the entrance of Leeds College of Art designed by Gerald E.Moira in 1903 and made by Rust’s Vitreous Mosaic Company
The mosaic has a colour palette of reds, blues, greens and yellow core.
The red from the previous designs could have come from the mosaic, so using the blue or yellow core could be an option.
The mosaic also has images of Laurel leaves, which itself symbolises a few things...
- Creativity - ''Laurel leaves were commonly put under pillows at night to gain inspiration through dreams and its intoxicating properties are associated with prophetic and poetic inspiration.''
- Peace and Protection - ''Today laurel is seen as a symbol of peace. It also indicates a power over the passions and is thought to protect from the influence of evil spirits and to give protection from lightening.''
- ACHIEVEMENT - ''It has long been a symbol of victory. Laurel was given as a symbol to the winner in Pythian games. Masons consider the laurel symbol to signify the hopeful expectation of success in the search for the True Word. In the bible, laurel is an emblem of prosperity and fame. In Christianity it is said to symbolize the resurrection of Christ and the triumph of humanity. It is also the source of the word Baccalaureate and of poet laureate.''

Leeds Town Hall
The Town Hall was built as a statement of civic pride, visible evidence of the importance of Leeds as a major centre of trade and commerce. It is still so today, and although it is no longer the centre of municipal administration and justice it fulfills many important functions.
The Victoria Hall continues to provide a venue for concerts of all kinds. The Leeds International Concert Season, the triennial Piano Competition, the Christmas Carol Service for Leeds Schools, and recitals on the magnificent organ take place there. Prayer meetings, light entertainment, wrestling matches, auctions and dances are all held in the Town Hall.

Leeds College of Art - Previous Promotional Materials
I asked the marketing department for any previous promotional material used for the Leeds College of Art Graduation Ceremony. The designs are made in the marketing department themselves.
Here I have imagery of the previous flyer tickets, programme leaflet, and wallet (for certificate and tickets)
Measurements:
Ticket - 128 x 98
Programme booklet - 200 x 210 (100 x 210 folded)
Certificate wallet - 500 x 336 (250 x 336 folded)
They each use a simple colour scheme which is scarlet, white and black.
''A lot of attention was paid to print finish, and a scarlet stock was used in a heavy weight with a gloss white foil for the type.''

They also sent me the brief used a few years ago to create this promotional material.
I found that the same material is printed off in large quantities and is used over a few years, meaning new designs are not required every year. However I am going to propose an idea for the next set off promotional material.

Purpose
To design promotional material and the dressing/signage of the venue for the graduation ceremony.
Key Messages
- Specialist College in art and design.
- Reflect our values – innovation and creativity, nurturing individuality.
- High quality work, a reputation for excellence and strong graduates.
- Reflect our history, tradition and present status.
Target Audiences
It is important that the promotional material appeals to our audiences.
- Graduands
- Friends and family of graduands
- Leeds College of Art staff
- Guest speakers and visitors
Objectives
Design for following:
- Venue dressing/signage
- Graduation Ceremony brochure
- Certificate Sleeve
- Invitations
Leeds Town Hall is a very large venue. There are many options to dressing the venue therefore we’d like to propose 2 lists, an essential and a nice to have.
- Essential – minimum dressing
- Nice to have - expanded dressing.
Content and Style
Consistency of visual identity must be apparent between the all promotional graduation publicity material.
A friendly but formal tone of voice should be used. This is an occasion in line with a family wedding for example.
It should be professional, considered, and innovative whilst portraying the College as a leader in art, design, media and communications education.
100% recycled paper stock will be used for printing purposes, which is usually quite porous- certificate sleeve may come in a different stock dependant on availablility.
Existing Leeds College of Art banners will be used.
Please select colours that compliment current promotional material with consideration for replication in CMYK, to ensure consistency throughout the campaign over a variety of applications (eg. internal and external signage).
In general the font Clarendon should be used, Helvetica may be used for smaller text.
Photographic opportunities should be considered whilst designing for the venue. The mosaic logo must be present throughout venue to feature in background.
Essential information to be included
When considering the design please ensure that the following details are incorporated:
- College name/logo – Mosaic logo should be used where possible
- College name, address and contact details, as outlined below
Leeds College of Art, Blenheim Walk, Leeds LS2 9AQ
Telephone - 0113 202 8000
Website - www.leeds-art.ac.uk
Deadlines
- Visit to Leeds Town Hall Friday 23rd October at 9.30am
- Promotional material that goes to print will be need to be complete at least 2 weeks before the event, may be sooner for the certificate sleeves.
- Graduation Wednesday 25th November 2009
If you need any further information, please contact Chloe.
I am going to re-write a simplified version of the brief taking into consideration the mandatories and specifications that are required.
